In the first half of the season (five episodes were screened for critics; the season will include 10 in total), “The Sex Lives of College Girls” lives up to its name without diving all too deep into the psychology of these particular college girls’ sex lives. Kimberly has her heart broken by her high school boyfriend in the first week of school and just as quickly moves on. Bela, as embodied by standout Kaur, pants after college guys with cartoon wolf level enthusiasm. Unlike a show such as “Sex Education,” none of them have much confusion or many questions about the mechanics of sex. They just know that they want it, and when they get to have it, life gets just that much more interesting.

It truly seems as though this show could go on for years—longer than college, even—because season 2 takes place during the leads’ first year at Essex College. (I would say “semester,” but they have trimesters on this show.) But what about season 3? Made for Love, The Time Traveler’s Wife, At Home With Amy Sedaris, and Raised by Wolves are just a few that have been axed recently. The shyest of the lot, Kimberley is the most relatable as she works hard to open up and expand her worldview. Rapp mines from her time as Regina George on Broadway’s Mean Girls, but with surprising vulnerability; Leighton is also a closeted lesbian from an affluent, conservative white family. The girls navigate a series of awkward and confrontational conversations during a family meal. Athena is proud of her petite, flexible, lithe body, and is always down for some one-on-one sexting to share her sexual fantasies with you. Like its first two seasons, season 3 of SLOCG will likely entail the ups and downs of college life for the quad squad as well as their evolving sexualities. At the end of season 2, Leighton breaks up with her “doppelganger” Tatum and gets back with her ex, Alicia, after quitting Kappa and coming out to her family. They bump up against everything from their parents’ expectations to misogyny (even when they’re not at frat parties). Yet the characters are savvy enough not to repeat the mistakes of the unfortunate girls in after-school specials. The show is affirming of the suitemates’ nascent sexuality without pretending that they, at age 18, know exactly how to wield it or always end up having a good time with their partners. At the core of the show’s appeal are the mismatched main characters, each one lovable and frustrating in her own way.
